Biblical Artist Series: Sandra Bowden Makes Literal Biblical Art

Visual artist Sandra Bowden has been interpreting Scripture and her own spiritual walk through mixed media for more than forty years. She has been acclaimed as one of the most unique, impressive, and inspiring Christian artists in America. Bowden’s work has been featured in books, magazines and gallery shows across the United States, Canada, Italy and Jerusalem. She is a former president of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA).

Her work fuses the vivid yet traditional imagery of the Old Testament—stone tablets and artifacts, Hebrew inscriptions, architectural depictions—with images of Christ’s passion, important music scores, and God’s natural creations. She has issued several series of artworks over the years: crucifixion scenes, artistic use of text and color, new interpretations of classic religious artwork, and even altered books with applied textures and hues. God’s grandeur and creativity shine through in each piece of her art.

Dru teaches Biblical literature, theology, and biblical interpretation at The King’s College. He is an editor for the Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Biblical Criticism series; an associate director for the Jewish Philosophical Theology Project at The Herzl Institute in Israel; and a co-host for the OnScript Podcast. His recent books include Biblical Philosophy: An Hebraic Approach to the Old and New Testaments (Cambridge University Press); Human Rites: The Power of Rituals, Habits, and Sacraments (Eerdmans); and Epistemology and Biblical Theology (Routledge). 

Before that, he was a high-school dropout, skinhead, punk rock drummer, combat veteran, IT supervisor, and pastor—all things that he hopes none of his children ever become.

He has lectured at colleges, schools, churches, conferences, and bars.

Ned grew up in the Philadelphia area and spent summers on the Chesapeake Bay, but now lives in the West End of Lancaster, Pennsylvania—much too far inland for him to get to go sailing. He and his wife Leslie have three daughters, one dog, and an unreasonable amount of books. But the most important thing to know about him is that he designed The Biblical Mind logo and masthead.
